Soulmate

It's that time of year again...

By now, the ground is frozen, our resolutions are waning, and we become incredibly aware that we are either single or in a relationship. The midway point between February and March, a certain February 14. Why do two numbers that mean nothing most other months of the year cause various assessments and valuations now? Why do we need one day dedicated to love and romance, when we should be lucky enough to celebrate life with a counterpart every day? [Don't get me wrong, I don't believe that every day in a relationship is perfect and worth celebrating, but AM of the mind set that on the whole, it's pretty amazing to have someone you care about along for the ride!]

For the coupled, I hope you can find a way to enjoy the company of the one you're with this holiday, or at the least, that you feel loved and/or appreciated.

For those solo, though the holiday can be difficult, I think we too can celebrate love: self-love. Below, I've compiled 14 fun, inexpensive ideas that will hopefully restore or revitalize you, and do not necessarily require a numero dos. I have done some of these, but I'm writing the list as much for me as I am for you. As a wise woman recently shared with me, "A party of one can be an amazing party when you like the guest."

  • Take yourself to the movies. Gosh, I love this and don't do it enough. Relish in selecting whatever flick you want to see and not having to compromise on butter or seasoning levels.

  • Try a new workout class. Indulge in candlelight yoga or something totally new and different (aerial arts, anyone?!). Turn your energy towards gratitude for what your body can do.

  • Finally try that bakery you follow on Instagram but have never been to, and buy yourself the biggest, most indulgent-looking treat on the menu.

  • Invite a friend over and cook dinner for him or her. If your friends are busy, what about your mom, dad, or that person you've been meaning to connect with all year?

  • Go to a clothing store and buy one piece that makes you feel bold, beautiful, or alive. Give yourself permission to choose something you wouldn't normally go for.

  • Better yet, buy a sexy pair of undies. Who cares if anyone sees them?

  • Find your local Meals on Wheels chapter and make homemade Valentine's Day cards to seniors who may be without company.

  • There's no easier way to feel loved than spending time with animals. See if you can walk pups at a local shelter. If you're not trained to volunteer, what about 30 minutes at a cat cafe? There are so many furry friends who would LOVE your affection.

  • Love reading? Read about love! In the spirit of the holiday :) Recently, I've found 'Attached' incredibly insightful.

  • Plan a trip.

  • Start learning a language. Perhaps in conjunction with the prior idea?

  • Create all the Pinterest boards your heart desires. No longer will Future You spend time searching for the perfect recipe, because it will be right there on your 'Party Appetizers' board!

  • Write a handwritten note to someone.

  • Turn up the volume, bust out some moves, and listen to the wise words of your biggest fan, Lizzo:

True love ain't something you can buy yourself True love finally happens when you by yourself So if you by yourself, then go and buy yourself Another round from the bottle on the higher shelf

'Cause I'm my own soulmate (Yeah, yeah) I know how to love me (Love me) I know that I'm always gonna hold me down (Always gonna hold me down) Yeah, I'm my own soulmate (Yeah, yeah) No, I'm never lonely (Lonely) (No I'm never lonely, no) I know I'm a queen but I don't need no crown Look up in the mirror like damn she the one
